Submissions must be the author’s own independent work that was performed while he/she was an undergraduate at Northwestern University or NU-Qatar. The project may be one that the undergraduate pursued under the guidance of a mentor(s). NURJ accepts work in the form of research papers and abstracts, posters, presentations, artwork, interviews, podcasts, multimedia projects, and more from all fields of study, such as life and physical sciences, social sciences, applied sciences, and the humanities.
Authors who publish in NURJ maintain the right to present their research and ideas in any form, in whole or in part, in any other conference or publication. Contributors should be aware, however, that many other academic journals and conferences require exclusive rights to published ideas. NURJ maintains the non-exclusive right to publish or reproduce published articles. NURJ will provide a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to all published works. This will provide a permanent link to the work online and allow it to be more easily accessible.

What is the difference between NURJ Paper and NURJ Online?
Paper is our paper journal that primarily features the best theses written by undergraduate students under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Often these condensed versions of senior theses, but it is possible for a well written and department recommended thesis to be published as well. Print only publishes once a year.
To be considered for NURJ Paper, please be sure that:
- Your thesis has a faculty adviser
- You have extensively met your adviser to discuss and/or review your thesis.
- Optional, but preferred: You have a grant associated with Northwestern (e.g. Summer Undergraduate Research Grant, Academic Year Undergraduate Research Grant, Department fellowship, Language Grants, Medill Grants…)
Online, on the other hand, serves all undergraduate researchers and publishes multiple times a year. This platform publishes research in many formats such research papers and abstracts, posters, presentations, artwork, interviews, podcasts, multimedia projects, etc.
Can I submit even if…
- I already graduated?
Yes. NURJ Paper features theses that were completed in the previous academic year. You can also submit work completed in the previous academic year to NURJ Online.
- I don’t have a faculty advisor?
It depends on your project and which platform you want to publish on. NURJ Paper requires you to have a faculty advisor that has been involved through the whole process. NURJ Online does not require you to have a faculty adviser, but you do need someone who can verify that your submission is your original work.
- My faculty advisor is not from Northwestern?
Yes. As long as you are an undergraduate at Northwestern, you can submit to the NURJ.
- My work is in a language other than English?
I am not currently done with my project for NURJ Online. Can I submit for the next edition?
If you are not able to make the deadline, you will not be considered for the current edition, but the submission portal will remain open. As long as you submit by the next deadline, you are eligible for consideration for future editions.
Do I need to edit or adjust my material beforehand?
It is not necessary to edit your work before submission, but encouraged if you want to do so.
What style should my thesis or research paper be in?
Please format your paper to APA style with footnotes, without in-text citations.
Who can sign the Author Agreement Form?
Though usually the faculty advisor, if you do not have one for your project, the person who signs the form must be someone who was involved in the process from conception to completion and can verify that the materials being submitted is your original work.
